Blockbuster Exclusive Videos

I have the Blockbuster Freedom Pass (i love it) which enables me to rent as many movies (2@time) from my local store for $29.95 a month. I definitely watch more than 6 movies a month so Blockbuster is getting the short end of the stick on this deal. There are a lot of people that ask me why i don't use Netflix (which i once used when it first came out, but eventually canceled). The reasons are as follows:

1. My mailman sucks, he jams everything into my mailbox and my mail is a crumpled up when i pull it out, this is bad for DVD's (after reading this he will probably wipe his boogers on my mail, which I think he already does).

2. I hate waiting for things.

3. I like the people that work at Blockbuster, they always have good movie recommendations and they always want to know how i liked the movies i rented.

4. The movies are accessible within a very short drive. If i want to sit on my ass all weekend and take in 12 movies (you may say that there aren't that many good movies at blockbuster but perhaps you haven't combed the special interest or foreign section, you probably only listen to top 40 music as well).

5. Movies are like currency, if i pick something up one day and don't watch it and something better just hit the shelf i can trade it out and re-rent it later.

A few weeks ago I saw something that disturbed me. DVD's on the shelf that have some really bad Blockbuster cobranded packaging that screamed low budget made for TV movie. In fact these movies are exclusive to me and the other elitist Blockbuster members.

From a content distribution standpoint it doesn't seem to make sense for a Production company to put all their eggs in one basket. Why would you not want to distribute your films to Netflix and Blockbuster or wherever customers have demand for them? Is this a cry for to have your movies pirated and made available to everyone? And what's with the corny packaging, make the movies look expensive and exclusive if that's what you're aiming at. I didn't even want to pick one up with a pair of BBQ tongs seeing how there were so many of them and they were movies i don't remember being in the theaters. So with all that being said i saw an awesome movie last night that was a Blockbuster exclusive. I wish i could recommend it to everyone but lo siento to my Netflix peeps, not for you. Maybe it's on bit torrent. The movie is appropriately titled "Harsh Times".

Update: After doing some more research on this i came across a story published about a month ago that the NVDA or the National Video Distribution Association was hopping mad about the deal with Blockbuster. Here is an excerpt:

Stuck in bed. I rarely get sick, it happens like maybe once a year. I am very lucky to be resilient. But today... I feel like i was just smacked with a ton of bricks. Seems interesting that the boys over at ODEO would name one of the product features after their company. Honestly I think if i was to goto a site with a button that said "send me an Odeo" i'm not sure i would click on it, what the hell is an ODEO?

I picked this up off of Ev Stones feed today:

The idea is this: You click on that button, and you land on a page where if you have a mic on your computer you can send me a voice message. I'll get the message in my Odeo inbox (and an alert in email). You don't need an Odeo account or anything (unless you want to put the button your page. Which you do.)

Of course i do Ev, this shit is cool! So I went to Odeo's site (after a little searching, you will find it under the manage menu under buttons) i was presented with many multiple button versions to pick from. Fat ones, skinny ones, tall ones, short ones and guess what? Some of them said "Send me an ODEO" and some of them said "Send me a VoiceMail". So perhaps this is a branding experiment. Nothing wrong with seeing what sticks with measurable results I always say. I opted for the one that said leave me a voicemail all magenta with the bird on it (peepit and clickon it, it's on the right). Noah Glass if you're reading this, hook me up with that shirt i hound you about everytime i see you. Brown / Pink Bird size Large, then go ahead and Send me an ODEO!

If you have read this blog in the past you have probably picked up on the fact that i'm obsessed with snowboarding. Yes, it's kind of a sickness. But it makes me so happy. I love being up in the mountains. I like the cold. I even like the wet. But most of all i like carving big lines through untracked cold fluffy powder snow. And not the 32 degree kind of powder, but the 24 degree powder or colder. and not the kind that sits on top of a sheet of ice. right now there is 17" of cold dry powder sitting on top of some fresh snow that fell over the last few weeks. and i sit here and wait patiently. my bag is packed and my clothes are laid out, and much like a fireman i'm waiting for the call and i'll slip on my clothes in one fell swoop and slide down the firepole. i wait for the people who don't love snowboarding as much as me who drive 4 wheel drive vehicles that will never see anything remotely offroad. it's very sad. if you want to stunt with a flashy ride that sits on 22's buy a car that isn't made for offroad or live somewhere where you can't go offroad. and to all the peeps with jeeps, you know who you are and you have no excuse, let's go out and do the sport we all enjoy. with 17" of snow sitting on top of fresh snow, it is your duty to be up there. so patiently (or maybe not so patiently... ) i wait. surfs up you bitches, let's ride....

I felt like i should just dig a snowcave and camp out for the night but i decided a hot shower seemed pretty compelling. Took BART back to SFO and back to Seattle. Rain. Ugh. Cold. Ugh. And i missed all the big snow dumps up in the mountains and then it got warm. more rain, but in the mountains. ugh. nothing like 9 feet of fresh powder with a little rain on top. ugh. great little adventure in SF, so that's the tradeoff. I'm definately heading back there.

I love WIFI, it's means more blogs from more places. I'm sitting in the back section of the Ritual Roaster down in the Mission (take the 22nd street stop on the BART and make your way over to Valencia and then backtrack a couple of blocks). It's supposed to be where people come to do techie things and drink coffee. i'm hear to see if it's true. It's got a russian theme, with sort of a 60's futuristic flair. To conserve power on the weekends there is a little plate that goes over the power outlet under my table that say "NO OUTLETS ON WEEKENDS", so if you want to hang out for a while bring some extra batteries and maybe a book. this place is way better then the internet cafe/juice bar across the street from my hotel and next door to the asian spa. where i thought it would be cool to grab some juice and check my e.mail this morning. I walked in and there were some old dell pcs on folding tables and there was a homeless man passed out with his head on the keyboard. I turned around and walked out. some guy, who appears to be watching a movie on his ibook just got busted for being plugged into the wall. The barista who is wearing one of those little green communist hats with the little bill, just walked over and made him wind up his cord and put it back in his bag. JESUS DUDE DON'T YOU KNOW THERE IS NO POWER OUTLETS ON THE WEEKENDS, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU? she then walked over and made sure i hadn't violated the ritual of no_power_outlets_on_the_weekends. she just walked out and is taking a smoke break outside. i'm pluggin in.

Last night was fun. IODA people you party like it's 1999. I haven't been to a party like that since the glory days of the internet boom. If i ever start going on about how great those years were, i'm probably pretty drunk. just slap me.

Spent most of the Day walking around SF. Hiked up to the COIT tower. Scoped out North Beach and bought a Jack Kerouac Book at City Lights (it's a tradition), VANITY OF DULUOZ. My feet are killing me. This city has one of the greatest transit systems in the world, and for whatever reason i end up beating the feet on the hard concrete.

MAC WORLD, I SEEN IT! This guy down at the apple store gave me the inside that the bookstore across the street, CODY'S ON STOCKTON STREET was giving out free passes to macworld. the catch was that you had to wind your way through all of the books to the basement information desk. this is a brilliant way to get people to come through the store and hopefully buy some books. i didn't need any books, sorry cody. but i am giving you a plug on the blog (you're welcome and thanks for the pass!). So at macworld i made a few new friends and saw a bunch of things that i think i need including the new macbook and the new itv. I ended up buying a little something while i was there and will unveil that in a later blog after i get it going.

San Francisco - Day Two

I was walking down the street last night out in front of my hotel and there was a LOT of blood splattered on the sidewalk. I'm not a forensics expert, but from what i saw someone got jacked. SF is very similar to Seattle with little pockets of blocks that are bad. I am staying in the equivalent of somewhere between 2 and 3rd on Pike. there is an asian spa across the street and a carl's jr. on my block. what's strange is that across the street or within view of my hotel is Nordstroms where the lame buy plaid facconable shirts with color matched undershirts. I'm not bothered by grittyness, i welcome it. Had a dinner last night and caught up with some friends i made at the podcast hotel and the portable media expo who are doing vlogging. The food was absolutely terrible. The conversations were enlightening. You would think that you could get some badass chinese food in SF, or at least one would think that. Avoid Henry's Hunan, it sucks (sorry henry but i gotta call you out on this one). pay attention henry: Salt does not make terrible food taste good, it's still terrible food. I'm at the apple store right now jacking a little wifi. it's really slow. that's kind of makes me sad. the suns's out i'm going outside.

San Francisco Day One

I had a decent flight down here. It's surprising how it's only two hours, i always think it's . i guess i'm used to that 5 hour flight to DC so anything thing seems quick in comparison. I am averaging an exit row seat about 98% of the time, i'm a tall guy i could use the legroom. Here is a secret for all my readers. You want the exit row, just take your ticket up the counter and let them know you're pretty strong and a born leader in the event of a plane crash. generally if a plane crashes you more than likely arent going to have to worry about opening the door, so just lie if you have to. I decided to skip the 40 dollar cab ride into the city and took the BART (SF mass transit is awesome so you might as well take advantage of it) it was $5.50. With the $34.50 I saved i think i could almost get drunk off that tonight! yeah! I really hate the smell of cabs and usually you get a cab driver who talks to his buddies the entire time in a language you can't understand. nothing i hate more then feeling like i need to wash the back-of-the-cab-scum off me and getting out of the car completely irritated. the bart has got some pretty deluxe seats in it and i only felt "slightly-scummy", the only drawback was the little kid that was whining in the seat in front of me, yet much better than listening to a cab driver talking about the hot girls he's been tooling about the city. the hotel i checked into is kind boutique-y. more posting later i need to get to a vlogger dinner. not that i'm really a vlogger, wait scratch that, technically i've posted video on the internet so i guess i am. SF sweeeeeet. vlogging... sweet.

DAMMIT, I'm on my second trip to the apple store to try to get my machine fixed. Yes that's right my machine is not booting up. After taking my computer over to IanK (thanks dudebrah) who runs circles on the powerbook he told me i was pretty much stuffed, so i took it to the GENIUS bar last night and William (very knowledgable at the U-Village Apple Store if you need anything look him up) he told me the same thing about being stuffed. So i'm here yet again. Somehow the OS got corrupted, bummer. I am actually kind of amazed that i have become more and more computer agnostic lately and am able to blog and do all of the same things that i do from my phone and any computer hooked to the Internet. If anybody wants to know the essence of Web 2.o i think it starts with being able to continue your workflow from any machine or device. That might be the dumbest thing i've ever said. or maybe not. This is going to be a long day. Damn You APPLE. DAMN YOooooooooou!!!!!

Update 2 - After an archival and install (Ryan hooked me up with some disks, which somehow got lost, thanks Ryan) My Powerbook is up and running again. it's slow and it needs to be completely wiped and reformatted. SUPERGAWDDAMMIT (i am finding the word dammit ALL CAPS for some reason today really amusing). Good news is that the computer works, it's just slow. It might be the hard drive which is making this thing so slow and that would suck because then i gotta mail this bad boy back to APPLE and be completely with a computer for a few days. I had a hard enough time being with out it for a little over 24 hours. I might have to book a trip to fiji or somewhere remote and just take a vacation while that happens, i'll put it in an expense report and send it over to Steve Jobs. Don't worry Steve i'll be sure to take it easy on the mini-bar.

The playback kind of sucks on most of the videos and there doesn't seem to be any fast forward or rewind functionality, just a pause function. I think until they solve the problem of playback i don't care how compelling the content is and how much of it youtube has. i snagged this video and if anybody has a comment on how it plays lay it down for me!

When i was little my dad gave me his old scouting books from the 50's in hopes that i would follow in his footsteps and and go the way of the boyscouts. i used to pore of those books teaching myself first aid and how to tie knots and survive in the wilderness. when i was old enough for cubscouts i joined up (he was pretty proud). Scouts was a great bonding experience with my dad and we ended up winning the pinewood derby one year with the aid of a windtunnel and some wind resistant aircraft grade paint (you're the best dad). in addition to schooling people in the pinewood derby, i enjoyed a variety of crafts including underwater basket weaving (which is hella fun by the way if you've never tried it) and learned some important carving techniques for making weapons out of sticks with my ivory handled (plastic) cub scout knife. so what i learned from those golden days was that with a good bit of scouting something out, you will be prepared to take on anything that comes your way. so with that being said, i'm taking a trip to SF where the action is in web 2.0 to make some new friends and to reconnect with some old ones. I think i must have been inspired by the Jetsons, but i don't think i had even seen it. I wrote a book about my best friend the robot and submited it to the library book contest. i was a goofy ass kid. Shel Silverstien, author of Where the Sidewalk Ends, read my book and signed it, i still have it. so proud. i want my robot in the oh oh six.

Smoking Ban in Washington State

So it's official. This blurry ass picture from my camera phone of me smoking a cigarette indoors in a Bar with what appears to be a mustache, is the last of it's kind in Washington State. I hate cigarettes, and yes i finished the whole thing (painfully). I think they smell worse then shit, do you? Everytime i go out i feel like burying my clothes in the backyard because they smell so bad. I am never going to have to worry about having to take a shower before i put my smokey hair hits the "smokey pillow". i also thankfully get to limit my exposure to the equavalent of hanging out in a gigantic smoker lung. this is going to change the landscape of the club scene, should be interesting to see how many people are going to stand out and smoke on the sidewalk in the cold pissing rain. I'll be warm and happy and watching you from inside. will people start wearing goretex outerwear to the clubs? i hope so. actually, they already do.. will they put up tents and carry rain ponchos? maybe R.E.I. can start sponsoring club events. in summary,,,, smoking outside, very hip. very cal E forn E ahhhh....

Movie Review: First Descent & the Marines?

If you know me, you know i love snowboarding. Let me rephrase that, i'm addicted to it. So i was naturally excited when i saw this trailer for First Descent, watch it. Ian and i mobbed down to the theater to check it out yesterday. So before i talk about the movie i want to talk about the marines. Has anyone seen the commercial where the marines try to tempt you into killing people by showing snowboarders lost in the backcountry (funny how the snow is all packed out in the backcountry). they make it out because naturally they are leaders and work as a team! let me get to that recruiting office, that's ME! It's played on MTV often and targeted at the 18-25 male demographic. So what's the deal? why do the marines target snowboarders? Is it because we wear camo? I keep seeing ads on snowboarding sites and on mtv and there was a commercial before this movie that particularily rubbed me the wrong way. If the Marines are reading this, fire your marketing department. Snowboarding is not a team sport. That's the draw to it. It's for the individual and we all know there isn't room for individuals in the military. some people pick football in the winter to be part of a team. others pick snowboarding because they prefer to push themselves without a team or a position. these sports and there are others like them (think basejumping), are rooted in anti-establishment. we don't like your rules, we like our own. you are aiming at the wrong audience. what do you have to offer snowboarders? free heli-skiing? i really doubt it. so quit wasting my tax money and everyone elses. the mountains is where i go to pretend that wars aren't happening and that the politicians i didn't vote for aren't making poor decisions for the rest of us. a place that is peaceful and tranquil and makes me think that wouldn't the earth be cool if it just had people enjoying it instead of destroying it. i will not be vacationing in IRAQ on the taxpayers dime. the last thing i want to think about before a snowboard movie is picking sides and murdering someone that i don't know in a distant land over something i don't believe in. that just isn't me and i think i can speak for most snowboarders. Start targeting team sports and people who play first person shooters, those are your recruits, go get em. go target the red states, you voted for it so put on your camo and get to fighting for what you believe in. Put some commercials on the Country Music Channel and start targeting SKIIERS and people who like to hunt. Snowboarders aren't interested in joining the marines, IS THERE ANY SNOW IN IRAQ? if you are a marine recruiter i invite you to try to sway me into joining your "team". otherwise stand out in front of your local walmart and get busy.

Sorry, I had to rant. Back to the movie review...

This movie is unusual because it's out there educating people in normal theaters and i kind of like that. it speaks volumes about how far snowboarding has progressed. I remember when snowboarders weren't allowed to ride on "ski" mountains. There are still a couple of lame places like that, deer valley and alta come to mind as well as taos, but you also can't get a real drink in utah either so i guess that makes some sense, but what is new mexicos problem? i actually like skiing, it's fun. but not fun enough to give up snowboarding for a day. so here is an idea, marketing people listen up... how about a snowboard day at deer valley or alta? let snowboarders up there for one day and serve them free hot chocolate and chili in the lodges, actually open bar would be nice, but it is utah after all. i think the turnout would be better then ever. sure you will argue that snowboarders don't spend the money that skiiers do, but i will debate that. they are paying out the nose for your overpriced lift tickets aren't they? Plus this movie further proves that snowboarding is mainstream.

I digress...

so back to the movie i was expecting something close to dogtown and z-boys or riding giants but for snowboarding. Stacy Peralta pretty much rules and it was too bad he didn't get to making this film first, it would have been cool if he had the trilogy of all the greatest sideways sports together. but with that being said, i think it would have been a different movie altogether, so Stacy if you are reading... up the ante and make the sickest most infomative snowboard movie ever. Where this film differs from other snowboard movies is that there is a story that unfolds as 5 riders go to alaska to ride the BIG BACKCOUNTRY, the kind you take a chopper to. Remote. HUGE Mountain riding. The kind where you get to the top of peak and the worlds best riders sit up there and debate for a minute about uncertain death and call the helicopter back to pick them up. dropping in involves a 20 foot high windlip, there is only one line down and it involves a gigantic rock cliff and a leep over a crevasse. The film brings that emotion to the screen about the nerves involved in tackling this. Avalanche scenes are frightening. great movie great concept, my only complaint was that jeremy jones didn't join them. Terje more than made up for it though. if you want a movie with a little bit less of a story and a little more of the sickest Alaska riding ever, go pick up Absinthe's "POP" from last year it won't dissapoint.

I pay for monthly parking downtown, so i have card access into the garage. i'm a little impatient with the holiday shoppers that park in my building. call me an elitist but i'm a "regular parker" and they are not versed in the ways of "regular parking". How i do it: flash the badge and head to the top, no door dings no waiting. How they do it: creep along at 5mph and try to squeeze into a spot on the lower level. So needless to say if i see you at the gate waiting for your ticket i'm gonna flash my badge and get out front. my car goes 0-60 in about 5 seconds so i'm gonna beat you. everytime. so i flash my badge this morning, the gate goes up and i go. this lady next to me, after a two second lag, guns it BEHIND me and just lays on the horn. OHMYGOD how embarrassing for her. The parking lot is pretty empty of people but the people that run the booths and the office are right there all just in awe of what's going on. There is a car backing into one of the office spots so i'm not speeding off i'm at dead spot with this really angry woman with gigantic teased up fried hair hanging out of her car screaming at the top of lungs at me. Here is an excerpt "you're a fucking asshole, i'm gonna fucking kill..." this goes on the entire time i'm waiting for this car to just finish backing out so i can race up to the top and park door ding free. i looked back, smiled and said something to the effect that she clearly lost that race, and flipped her off. why? because i'm a true sportsman. so i get to the top of the garage, park and get in the elevator. i'm tapping madly on my sidekick (i'm not really mad like in a roadrage kind of way, i just type fast) and "boong" (or at least that is the sound i think the elevator doors make when they open..) and the big haired lady piles in. it's just me and this aggressive woman. she reaks of perfume and her hair is really high. i'm frightened. I laugh. it's definately an uncomfortable situation. before we get to the bottom she says "excuse me". i ignore her and keep tapping on the sidekick. and then again she emits something, but this time it's "excuse me, SIR." and when you call me SIR i can't help but to die a little laughing on the inside, i'm only 30 and look like i'm 20, don't call me mister either. So i turn and look her in the eye and she's got her hand out like she wants to do a truce. it's her left hand. maybe she has never shook a hand before or maybe she's not adjusted to society and it's handshaking norms. but she apologizes to me, and it was genuine. "i'm really sorry, i have a very bad temper and i was clearly wrong and NEEDED to tell you that". WOW, are you kidding me? I offer her my left hand taking a quick mental note that i need to wash the cheap perfume off of it when i get into the office, making me even later to my meeting. and i say "that's very big of you", what else do you say to that? So to whoever that woman was and i hope you are reading this, i truly appreciate you apologizing even if you are bipolar and need serious therapy.

ummmm.... anybody seen this? three words... 1. Oh 2. My 3. God. put it together and repeat three times. 1. oh my god. 2. oh my god. 3. oh my god. This is hands down the most messed up movie i have ever seen. ever. on the cover it says "...arrives with the Quentin Tarantino seal of approval..." and not in the Hero kind of way.

Here's a Plot summary from the back of the box.
"Oh Dae-su is an ordinary Seoul businessman with a wife and little daughter. After a drunken night in town, he is abducted and locked up in a strange private "prison". No one will tell him why he's there and who his jailer is and his fury builds to a single minded focus of revenge. 15 years later, he is unexpectedly freed, given a new suit, a cell phone and 5 days to unravel the mystery and discover the identity of the enemy who had him imprisioned. Seeking vengeance on all those involved, he soon finds that his enemy's tortures are just beginning."

the ending is brutal. watch it. if anyone has any links on this movie or has seen it comment on it, but don't ruin the ending.

Believe it or not I feel capable of air travel. After a short 2.5 hour
flight I have arrive at LAX. I haven't been here in a while but the
baggage claim looks like something out of a third world country, quite
sad really. Very dirty. My cab driver speaks little english and is a
very angry man. He keeps cursing at cars and waving his fist. I like
him, a lot. I wonder if he came to LA to become an actor, isn't that why people are here?

It's day 3 and my head has been pounding about 90% of the time. I can't really move my arms or lift anything and when i move around it feels like i've been run over by a dumptruck. All the painkillers are killing my appetite and i feel like i'm going to puke everytime i eat. Other than that i'm feeling A-OK! I want to thank everyone that has called, sent e.mails, IM's and SMS's, it's nice to know that i've got an exceptional set of friends. I also want to congratulate Kevin for putting up the first mobile podcast greeting card in history. Thanks everybody!

5.5 hours in the ER and i'm finally home. Looks like a possible fracture on the right scapula, need to have it re xrayed in two days. Dislocated my right shoulder. My face is swollen like Sloth from Goonies. I am going to hurt when the Morphine wears off. The bike seems to be ok just a couple of scratches. The helmet is broken all the way through, i guess that is what happens when you plow into a curb going 20+mph. I want to give a quick shoutout to the people over at Giro for making the Pnuemo, i will definately be buying another one just like it.

today three copies of MANOWAR's "Hell On Earth Part IV" magically appeared on my desk. Just look at the cover, how can you not unwrap it and watch it. I used to think metal was pretty cool in middle school (because my mom despised it), but i can't say i've followed it much since then. I have to hand it to these guys, they certainly pack those stadiums in europe, and the ladies crave them
